Building for Port Renfrew, Southwest Vancouver Island, BC

Port Renfrew is a few hundred people year-round at the end of Highway 14, on Port San Juan in Pacheedaht First Nation territory, and for a few months a year it is busy out of all proportion to its size. Hikers stage here for the West Coast Trail's Gordon River trailhead and the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, day-trippers come for the tide pools at Botanical Beach and the big trees around town, Big Lonely Doug among them, and the marina fills with boats heading out for the salmon and halibut off Swiftsure Bank. Nearly all of them come from somewhere else, Victoria, the Cowichan Valley or further away, and a lot of them book from a phone before a couple of hours' drive, which means the website is the storefront, and the storefront has to do its job before anyone sets out.

Work directly with a Vancouver Island developer

I work out of Ucluelet, up the same coast, and there is no direct road between the two, so the whole thing runs remotely: a phone or video call to start, the Get Started wizard to scope it, revisions by email. What the two towns share is the economy. Ucluelet is the same kind of place: a fishing and surf town at the end of a highway, with a summer that pays for the winter and visitors who decide on a phone before they arrive. A site that has to work in that season, on that signal, is the kind of site I'm set up to build.

Port Renfrew questions

Our business is closed half the year. Is a website still worth it?

That is exactly when it earns its keep. A lodge or charter in Port Renfrew is booked months ahead by people planning a trail or a fishing trip from somewhere else, so the site is taking those bookings in February while the door is shut. Off-season it can say plainly when you reopen and take bookings or a waitlist instead of going quiet.

Most of our guests arrive with no signal. Does that change anything?

It changes what the site has to do before they leave home. Directions, the meeting point, what to bring, the cancellation policy and a confirmation they can screenshot all belong on the site and in the booking email, because by the time someone is on Pacific Marine Road, or has dropped off the last tower on the way in, they may not be able to load anything at all.

How online booking works →

Do you offer local SEO for Port Renfrew, not just the website itself?

Yes. The searches that matter here are run from Victoria and the Cowichan Valley by people planning a trail, a beach or a fishing trip, such as "Port Renfrew accommodation", so that is where the work is aimed, more than at anyone searching from inside town. Acuity Local SEO is from $149/month on a 3-month first term, and no one can guarantee rankings.
